I served for 28 years in the Royal Navy as an Administrator and HR Manager, serving on various types of ships which took me all around the world. After returning back to my native Gloucestershire, I found employment with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This was the last place I thought I would end up working in a hospital, however the NHS and GHFT offers far more roles than just nurses and doctors and service leavers should be aware of the vast array of career opportunities that exist within this organisation. It is important to remember that you don’t have to have medical knowledge or experience to work in the care sector, there are many non-clinical support functions that are essential to the smooth running of this large organisation. The management and hierarchy structure is very similar to that in the military, which helps when transitioning into civilian life. There are also lots of development opportunities available and support to build on your existing qualifications.
I now manage a workforce of 70 administration staff who provide reception and administration support to 36 inpatient wards across two hospital sites. Amongst the motivational factors of my job are being able to encourage, develop and support an individual in their personal journey within the NHS.
