I feel passionate about the work I do within Nuclear Medicine at Gloucestershire hospitals because the team are a compassionate bunch that cares for each other and celebrates our diversity. I have heard on many occasions the Nuclear Medicine team describing themselves as a family. Working in Nuclear Medicine is a fascinating medical speciality. From a Radiological point of view we are looking at the physiology of organ systems. This work requires a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, including RWA, RPA, Nuclear Medicine Clinical Scientist, Radiographers, Clinical Technologists, Radiopharmacist, Radiopharmacy Technicians, Nurses, administration staff and Radiologists. But Nuclear Medicine also extends into Molecular Therapies where specific organs are targeted for treatment. And so, the Team is widened to include Oncologists and Therapy Radiographers.
Within our Trust this wide cross section of staff really do pull together to share their knowledge and expertise so that the patient has the safest and best experience while on their individual care pathways. My role within the team is twofold. Scientifically I am the Radiation Protection Advice (RPA) and the Medical Physics Expert (MPE). With this hat on I insure that both Staff and Patients are safe while they are in the ionising radiation environment. As the Head of Nuclear Medicine my role is to provide Leadership. I would say my preferred style is an affiliative leadership style. I am focussed on the well being of the team, as I believe we can then give the best care to our patients.
Nuclear Medicine is provides care to patients on many differ care pathways, e.g. cancer, dementia, cardiac, respiratory , gastrointestinal, and urology covering all age ranges. To our teams our patents are the loved-ones for many families and so we are focused on provided the best care. Our Nuclear Medicine Family is made up of team members from different cultures and we fully celebrate this.
